Honoring Shane Hammond with Heart, Heat, and
History at Waterford: Eldridge and Egan Capture First
Career NEMA Wins |
Waterford, CT — On Saturday, August 30th, the New
London-Waterford Speedbowl hosted an emotional and
action-packed night as the NEMA Midgets and LITES gathered
for the annual Shane Hammond
Memorial.
The event honors the memory of Shane
Hammond, whose mother, Deb Glockner Marvuglio, started the
Shane Hammond Believe Foundation. Her tireless advocacy has
reshaped safety standards across tracks, clubs, and race
teams —i ntroducing vital improvements like driver
restraints, helmets for track officials, full containment
seats, and enhanced wall cushioning.
The NEMA
LITES took to the track for a special 37-lap feature. Tyson
Adamik in the #88 Adamik Motorsports entry lined up
alongside Drew Eldridge in the #55 to lead the field to
green. Adamik jumped out front early, taking command into
turn one. Behind him, Tiana Kibbe in the Kibbe Racing #94
and Eldridge battled side-by-side for second, with Eldridge
eventually gaining the upper hand on the backstretch.
Momentum quickly shifted further back as R.J. Deighton
#42 mounted a charge, overtaking Kibbe for third coming off
turn four. Just a lap later, Paul Scally used the low line
to slip past Kibbe for fourth. Meanwhile, NEMA veteran Randy
Cabral #47 was on the move, wrestling fifth from Kibbe by
lap 5 after a few hard-fought laps.
Up front, the top
three, Adamik, Eldridge, and Deighton, broke away, locked in
a tight draft. On lap 13, Eldridge made his first serious
move for the lead, diving to the inside in turn one. Adamik
responded with poise, holding him off and rebuilding a
slight cushion down the backstretch.
By lap 15,
Eldridge struck again, this time with more force. He got a
strong run off turn two, maintained his momentum through the
low line in turn three, and edged Adamik down the front
stretch to take over the top spot.
As Eldridge pulled
away slightly, a new battle emerged for second. Deighton
pressured Adamik and eventually cleared him with a strong
inside move on lap 17. One lap later, Scally moved into
third, while Cabral, charging from 12th on the grid, worked
past Adamik for fourth.
As the laps wore on, Eldridge
continued to lead, but Deighton wasn’t letting him get
comfortable. The #42 car stayed glued to Eldridge’s rear
bumper, searching for any opening. Meanwhile, the battle for
the top five remained fierce. On lap 25, Ben Mikitarian #9
capitalized on a high-line slip by Adamik to claim fifth.
With just three laps to go, the crowd was on its feet.
Deighton made his move, pulling alongside Eldridge on the
front stretch. But Eldridge held firm on the low side,
keeping his rhythm steady under pressure.
Coming to
the white flag, it was a two-car dogfight. Deighton once
again drove to the outside entering turn three, racing
side-by-side through the final corners. But it was Eldridge
who emerged victorious, holding his line and his nerve to
score his first-ever NEMA Lite win in dramatic fashion.
R.J. Deighton finished a close second, and Paul Scally
completed the podium, a fitting tribute in a race honoring a
driver whose legacy lives on through every safe lap turned.
In the victory lane interview, Eldridge, commented on
his first NEMA LITES career win, “This is awesome, I
actually felt this yesterday, when I race dirt, I can feel
when a win is coming. Yesterday, I woke up and I thought we
are going to do really well this weekend. My goal going into
today was just to run a 14.5 second lap time, and we killed
it with a 14.3 and then came back with a 14.1. Then I
thought, I’m ready to go home. That was my goal. My great
grandfather won here and I don’t think we have been in the
winner’s circle since. I’ve got the bloodline in racing, but
I do not have a lot of people helping me along the way. So I
have had to learn everything on my own and this is great.
This is just awesome.”
To round out the top 10 were
strong finishes by: Drew Eldridge #55, R.J. Deighton #42,
Paul Scally #30, Randy Cabral #47, Ben Mikitarian #9, Tiana
Kibbe #94, Mike Pernesiglio #28, Brayden Egan #59, Kyle
Valeri #17, and Zach Martinez #17.
Later in the
night, the NEMA Midgets hit the track for their 25-lap
feature event. Brayden Egan #3M and Joey Bailey #A1 led the
field to the green flag, with Egan jumping out front going
into turn one, followed closely by Bailey and Paul Scally
#30.
As the laps unfolded, Egan began to stretch his
lead, while a heated battle developed for fourth place.
Randy Cabral, piloting the Bertrand Motorsports #74, found
himself under pressure from Mike Horn #93 and Avery Stoehr
in the Bertrand Motorsports #39. Horn stayed glued to
Cabral’s rear bumper while Stoehr attacked from the high
side coming out of turn four.
By lap five, Cabral and
Stoehr were racing side by side into turn one. Cabral
managed to hold off the hard-charging Stoehr for another
lap, but Stoehr wasn’t backing down. Staying committed to
the high groove, Stoehr found the momentum he needed going
into turn one, pulling alongside Cabral again out of turn
two. The two ran door-to-door down the backstretch and
through turns three and four before Stoehr completed the
pass to take over fourth.
Though Cabral stayed close
and continued to challenge over the next several laps,
Stoehr maintained the position by carrying speed on the high
side and defending his line.
Up front, Egan continued
to dominate, extending his lead to nearly a straightaway
over Bailey, while Scally steadily chipped away at a
four-car-length gap to Bailey. As the leaders approached
lapped traffic, Scally closed in, getting right on Bailey’s
bumper and searching for a way around. Bailey, however, held
his ground and retained second.
With the laps winding
down, Egan remained in control, cruising to a commanding
victory — his first-ever NEMA Midget win. When the checkered
flag waved, he crossed the line with a lead of over five
seconds, followed by Bailey in second and Scally rounding
out the podium in third.
In a victory lane interview,
Egan commented on his first NEMA Midget win, “Car Owner, Jim
Miller did a great with this car all year, but tonight, we
really hit the set-up. Honestly, I can’t believe this. I
didn’t expect this, that's for sure. This is one of the
biggest races of the year and I'm happy to get the win here
at The Speedbowl. I come here almost every week and to get
the win here is definitely pretty cool. ”
To round
out the top 9 were strong finishes by: Brayden Egan #3M,
Joey Bailey #A1, Paul Scally #30, Avery Stoehr #39, Randy
Cabral #74, Matt O’Brien #16, Kyle Valeri #21, Lee Bundy
#49, and Mike Horn #93.
NEMA LITES are back in
action at Star Speedway, “The Place to Race” on Saturday,
September 13th.

Young Gun Brayden Egan
Entering the NEMA
Midgets Field
|
When veteran driver and car owner, Jim Miller called
with the opportunity to race the iconic number 47
Bertrand/Linblad/Drinan Mid-Rail Chassis , it was a
life-changing moment for this rising star. Shocked but
grateful, Brayden Egan knew this was more than just a chance
to race; it was a chance to be part of something special. "I
understand what goes into a racing operation, especially at
this level, so to be asked to be behind the wheel was truly
an honor,".
Brayden was recently voted by his peers
the Mechanic of the Year Award. "It was an honor to receive
that award, knowing there are so many others who put so much
effort into their cars. To be recognized for my efforts
means a lot” Despite not yet having a long list of racing
achievements, he considers the award one of his proudest
accomplishments.
Looking ahead, he is aware of the
challenges that come with racing a more powerful car. "The
biggest challenge is getting used to the torque and
horsepower of the car. Learning to control that with my foot
will take some adjustment,". Additionally, adapting to the
differences between the Bertrand /Lindblad/Drinan chassis
and his previous Hawk NEMA LITES car, both from a mechanical
and driving perspective, is something he's focused on as he
prepares for the season. Fortunately, his familiarity with
the tracks and the drivers in the NEMA Lite series will give
him some much needed experience to make the adjustment.
Having joined a team with a history of success in NEMA,
he recognizes the value of that knowledge. "I can trust the
car and the owner, so I can focus more on my driving rather
than dealing with problems. I hope to one day add my name to
the list of wins they’ve achieved," he said.
When it
comes to his goals for the season, he remains grounded yet
ambitious. "My goals are to learn as much as I can, finish
races, gain respect, race clean, and progress both on and
off track throughout the year." Behind every successful
driver is a support system, and Brayden is no different.
"I’m lucky to have the support of my dad, my girlfriend,
Taylor, my friends, Anthony, Josh, Ben, TJ, Travis, and
Julian, as well as Pernesiglio Racing, Redline Motorsports,
Jim Miller, Circle Performance, my grandparents, and my
mom.” Brayden expressed the importance of the people who
help him both during and outside of race season.

he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his racing
career, there’s no doubt that with determination, support,
and passion for racing, this driver is one to watch in the

In 2025 NEMA fans will have their eyes on an
exciting rookie, RJ Deighton, a rising star on the
motorsports scene. RJ has an impressive track record in the
NASCAR Youth Series, where he dominated with four
championships in a single season. RJ is now stepping up to
compete in the ultra-competitive Northeastern Midget
Association series and is poised for success! Most recently,
RJ showed off his skills in a restricted wingless 600 Racing
at Airport Speedway in Newcastle Delaware.
As RJ gets
ready for his debut in a NEMA midgets, preparation will be
key. RJ said his approach is multifaceted. "To prepare
myself, I go out to the garage and learn more about the
cars. That way, when I'm on the track, I can better
communicate with my dad about how the car is handling. I
also train on the simulator to get a feel for different
track conditions, so I know what to expect in real-world
racing". Staying mentally and physically prepared is just as
important as having a fast car, and RJ has a solid pre-race
routine. "Before each race, I scope out the track and figure
out what lines I can take to be fast".
One of the
biggest transitions facing RJ will be adjusting to the
handling and setup of the NEMA cars. But RJ is no stranger
to these types of adjustments. "The car handling is
definitely different than a micro 600, but they feel pretty
similar to a quarter midget". But he's not resting on his
laurels. He is continuing to hone his skills in key areas
like downforce management, and learning when to lift or push
depending on the track conditions.
With his first NEMA
season around the corner, RJ has set some lofty, yet
realistic goals. "My goal for the 2025 season is to earn
consistent top 5 or top 10 finishes." he says. "If I feel
like I'm really exceeding, I'd love to get a victory or at
least finish in the top 3". It's a humble, yet ambitious goal
for someone with such a strong foundation in racing. Every
young racer needs guidance, and RJ is fortunate to have some
of the best in the business in his corner. "I've been
learning a lot from Tim Bertrand, Avery Stoehr, and the
whole Bertrand Motorsports crew." When it comes to who he
looks up to in the NEMA division, RJ states "I really look
up to two teams: Bertrand Motorsports and Matt Seymour
Racing (MSR). Both teams have great drivers with amazing
skills, and I hope to race like them someday." Behind every
great racer is a strong support system, and RJ is no
exception. "I have a lot of people supporting me--my family,
friends, and everyone who helps me get faster in the car. My
dad is my biggest supporter. He's always there to help me
get better and better, race after race." This unwavering
support will be essential as RJ navigates the highs and lows
of his first season in the NEMA series.
While racing
is clearly RJ's passion, he also enjoys activities off the
track that help him stay physically and mentally sharp.
"Outside of racing, I like to play lacrosse and go to
football games," With his strong foundation in racing,
dedicated work ethic, and a team of experienced mentors
behind him, RJ Deighton is ready to make his mark in the
Northeastern Midget Association. RJ's Beast Gearte midget
will be exciting to watch for the 2025 season and beyond.
Keep an eye out for this rising star as he makes his debut
in the NEMA series. |
