Pole starter Bobby East finished second ahead of Alex Bowman,
Brad Kuhn and Cole Whitt. Kuhn extended his National point lead
to 40 points over Brad Sweet, who finished 14th, while Western

Bertrand, Carter
Team At Phoenix for Copper World Classic Nov. 12th |
Bertrand Motorsports, the
2009 Northeastern Midget Association owner champion, and driver
Cole Carter will team up for next Thursday’s 25-lap USAC Midget
race at Phoenix International Speedway’s Copper World Classic.
Carter’s Beast will be powered by Bertrand’s Circle Performance
built Esslinger motor. Bertrand and his wife Cara will be
providing some sponsorship as well.
The Carters took the motor out of Bertrand’s #47 after the NEMA
final race at Thompson Speedway. The motor, which carried both
driver Randy Cabral and Bertrand to their second straight
respective championships, did not suffer a single breakdown
throughout the season.
“Cole qualified sixth and finished third in last year’s race and
he did that with average equipment from an engine perspective,”
said Bertrand. ”We are excited about being with the Carter
family again especially on this level.”
Carter was part of the Bertrand’s “guest driver” program in 2009
earning two top fives, including a second, in three starts.
Sprint Cup star Ryan Newman and NASCAR Modified standout Ted
Christopher also drove for Bertrand over the season.

Cabral Celebrates
NEMA Driving Title |
Brockton, MA - Randy Cabral
isn’t about to give the 2009 Northeastern Midget Association
driving championship, the second in a row for him and car owner
Tim Bertrand, back. “I’ll take them anyway I can get them,” he
admits.
Bertrand, a one-time driver, and Cabral, who followed his dad
Glen into NEMA, “took” their respective championships with
consistency. They won five times but it was the 11 top-five (in
14 races) that made the difference. They’ll top the honorees at
the NEMA Awards Banquet Saturday night Nov. 21 at White’s of
Westport in Westport, MA.
Cabral, a school teacher, won with an 84-point bulge on
runner-up three-time winner Nokie Fornoro, who missed a race,
and a 211 edge on third-place Adam Cantor, a two-time winner and
“twice a victim of circumstances.” NEMA had seven winners in all
– Jeff Horn, Jeff Abold, Russ Stoehr and Greg Stoehr each
getting one.
“Nokie and Adam are the two guys I’m most comfortable with,”
said Cabral. “We take nothing away from each other. It doesn’t
matter where we are.”
Winning the first three of the first four races (he was second
in the other), Cabral, never trailed in the drivers points race.
With 13 wins over the last two years, he has moved to seventh
place on NEMA’s all-time win list. Eighteen have come in the
four years with Bertrand.
Acknowledging Bertrand “gives me the best equipment possible,”
Cabral says the objective is to “do the best we can” and that is
especially so when “we don’t have a car that is capable of
winning.” The season-ending World Series at Thompson is a case
in point, Cabral’s third place “just enough” to get the
championship for Bertrand by four points over Mike Jarret.
The relationship between the families, tempered by both joy and
sorrow, is, Cabral insists “not about championships but about
friendship. We were friends before we were owner/driver. If Tim
called up tomorrow and said he is putting somebody else in the
car we’d still be friends.”
The biggest 2009 win came at Twin State in September. “My
grandfather Henry died that week,” Cabral explains. “We had the
funeral on Friday and Friday night we were getting ready to go
racing. This is what we do, go racing. If I missed a race
because of his funeral, my grandfather would have climbed out of
the grave and kicked my butt.
“Ryan Newman was one of his favorites,” continues Cabral. “When
I beat him up at Lee (Newman was also in a Bertrand car) I
called by grandfather and said ‘Hey, I beat your boy.’ He
laughed and he was proud. He would call every Sunday morning and
ask how I did whether we raced or not. It was tough when I
didn’t get that call.”
Hitting the wall at Waterford was the low point “There was
nothing wrong with the car,” he says. “I made a mistake. It was
strange, the only DNF we had all year was at a track I really
love to race on.”
Cabral says “growing up all I thought about was driving
Midgets.” He would be “more than happy” to try a Supermodified
or a Modified but presently is more than content. “Right now, I
see myself driving for Tim Bertrand until he fires me,” he says.

Bertrand Prevails
In Unique
NEMA Owners Race |
Brockton, MA – Tim Bertrand
is doubly proud of his second straight Northeastern Midget
Association owners championship. In a battle that came down to
the final laps of the final feature (at Thompson Speedway’s
World Series), Bertrand nipped Mike Jarret by a scant four
points.
Randy Cabral’s third (in the Bertrand 47) behind winner Nokie
Fornoro (in the Jarret 4) left little room to spare for
Bertrand. While he doesn’t deny the joy in winning, he takes
special delight in the battle.
“We had no mechanical dnfs all year,” Bertrand says. “That is
almost unheard of in Midgets. The fact that the Jarret car had
no dnfs at all is incredible. We should have won the owners
title by 200 points, instead the #4 gave us as good a run for
the championship as perhaps NEMA has ever seen. The top two cars
had one dnf between them (Cabral crashed at Waterford) and no
mechanical dnfs.”
Bertrand, who also maintained a NEMA Lites car, has high praise
for Jarret and his wife Lu, both as competitors and friends, who
retired as owners following the last race.
The second championship comes in the fourth year of the
partnership between Bertrand, a former driver, and Cabral. The
team has 18 wins, five coming in 2009.
“Part of [our success] is the work Randy and his dad Glen do
during the week. Part of it is also a midseason switch to Jon
Andruk (Circle Performance) regarding the motor,” Bertrand
continues. Andruk, he adds, made the Esslinger motor “more
reliable, insuring a lack of problems.”
Bertrand Motorsports pretty much dominated in 2008 with eight
wins in 17 races. “What we had was a great driver and we had the
set up perfect a number of times,” Bertrand says. “We proved
it’s not about the motor, not about the ignition box, not about
the number of rpms; - it’s about the set up.”
Others proved that as well this year – Adam Cantor, Jeff Abold,
Jeff Horn, in addition to Fornoro, had excellent runs.
The two Bertrand championship seasons are similar. In ‘08 the
team did it with wins (8); this year with top-five finishes. The
car was out of the top five only once over the last eight races
including five podium spots. “We proved when we were right on we
could win and we proved when we were not right on we were still
competitive,” Bertrand boasts.
The championship was in doubt until, on lap 16, Cabral passed
Cole Carter, who was also driving a Bertrand entry, for third.
“I was nervous, sick to my stomach,” says Bertrand, freely
admitting he was thinking points at that point.
Bertrand could be even busier in 2010, heading up a team that
could also include one or two other cars. The “guest program”
which this year included, in addition to Carter, Sprint Cup star
Ryan Newman and Modified ace Ted Christopher, will most likely
continue as well. |

Nokie Fornoro
Takes Rifchin Trophy;
Cabral, Bertrand are Driver and
Owner Champions |
Thompson, CT – Taking
control on a lap 16 restart, Nokie Fornoro captured the 25-lap
Northeastern Midget Association feature Sunday at Thompson
Speedway’s World Series. The Marvin Rifchin Trophy Race was the
final outing for Fornoro’s owner Mike Jarret.
Rifchin Trophy Story
Below
The season finale, it was the 110th career Midget victory for
Fornoro, 45 of them in NEMA including three this year.
A second straight driving championship all but secured going in,
five-time winner Randy Cabral gave Tim Bertrand his second
straight owners title with a third place finish. Bertrand
finished with a four-point bulge on Jarret.
Fornoro beat leader Jeff Horn into the first turn on the
restart. Cabral secured third on the restart as well, falling in
behind Horn. The top three ran to the checkered followed by
Cabral’s teammate Cole Carter (Bertrand #39) and Jimmy Miller
(Miller #3m).
“It is an emotional win,” said Fornoro, pointing out his
relationship with Jarrett “is a lot deeper than a owner/driver
thing. I wanted this for him.” He said he was ”focused” on
“getting the car to run the way I like it here. You have to go
really hard in the corner to make it turn right.”
“You live by the yellow and you die by the yellow,” offered Horn
who had a half-a-straightaway advantage when yellowed appeared.
Running hot, he said the car “bogged down on the restart. I was
a dead beat. It came back but it was too late.”
Fornoro, who was also having motor problems (“there was smoke in
the cockpit”) said he was not happy with the yellow either. In
the end, he added, it came down to just how fast the restart
would be. It was pretty fast and I just took it in very hard.
The car was set up for the middle and the top.”
“It was the only time I went into one and the car actually
stuck,” said Cabral on the pass for third that wound up giving
Bertrand the owner crown. “Once I realized how bad my car was
and how good he was, I knew I had to keep Nokie in view.”
Horn was the second leader. Russ Stoehr (Angelillo #45), who
started sixth, had the lead before the race was a lap old.
Stopped by a broken hose clamp, he gave up the lead to Horn on
lap seven, the latter jumping out to a sizable lead.
Boxed in early, Fornoro actually dropped back from his seventh
starting spot. “Once I got it up the race track I knew I could
catch Russ and Jeff,” he said. It didn’t take him long to
realize “I had the best car.”
After a spirited three-lap battle with Miller, Fornoro moved
into second on lap 12. He confident he'd catch Horn "maybe with
two or three laps left." |

NEMA’s Owners
Crown To Be
Decided At World Series |
The owners championship is
still a question mark as the Northeastern Midget Association
brings the 2009 season to a finish at Thompson Speedway’s
rescheduled World Series this weekend, Oct. 24-25. Defending
champion Tim Bertrand (47) takes a 26-point edge on Mike Jarret
(4) into Sunday’s 25-lap feature.
NEMA has a long relationship with the World Series that was
rained out last weekend. Championship battles ending at the
traditional season-ending event are hardly unique. It will be
NEMA’s only visit to Thompson this season.
Bertrand’s driver Randy Cabral already has his second straight
championship in hand. Jarret’s driver Nokie Fornoro is assured
of second place in the final standings. Both are seasoned-hands
on the ultra-quick fifth mile, totaling 11 victories between
them.
Cabral, the “unofficial “ record holder with a 17.620 lap turned
at last year’s World Series, is the club’s all-time Thompson
winner with seven. Fornoro has been winning at Thompson since
1982. Russ and Greg Stoehr have both been involved in classic
season ending-races at Thompson in the past as well.
Clearly the fastest place NEMA visits, a victory at Thompson is
a perfect ending. Adam Cantor, the winner a couple weeks back at
Twin State, makes no secret of his desire to end a strong
campaign in Thompson’s Victory Lane.
Other possibilities for the Marvin Rifchin Trophy are Jeff Horn,
Erica Santos and Jim Miller. Chris DeRitis, NEMA’s top rookie,
Abby Martino and John Zych Jr. are among the drivers seeking to
protect top-10 spots in the driver and owner standings.
Rifchin Trophy Story
Below
Cabral, who doesn’t like talking about points, had five wins
among ten top-fives in 13 starts en route to the drivers
championship. He comes to the World Series in pursuit of his
27th career win, all of them coming in the past 10 campaigns.
In one less start, Fornoro had a couple wins among 10 tops 10s.
He’ll be after his 45th NEMA checkered. |

Thompson Always A
Test For NEMA |
Pointing out Thompson
Speedway “separates the men from the boys” is both a “true” and
a “tired” observation. It has been so for over half a century.
It will continue when the Northeastern Midget Association’s
25-lap Marvin Rifchin Trophy Race joins World Series festivities
Oct. 24-25 with a 25-lap feature.
En route to victory in last fall’s World Series, Randy Cabral
had a fast lap of 17.620 in the Bertrand 47. How far have the
speeds increased over the years at Thompson? In the fall of 1974
Dave Humphrey’s 21.428 seconds qualifying run had everybody
buzzing.
The race honors Rifchin, the tire manufacturer (M&H) who was a
long-time contributor to NEMA.
Rifchin Trophy Story
Below
Cabral, defending driver champion and current point leader, will
be looking for his eighth career win at Thompson (five in
Bertrand equipment). He has won the past two World Series and
three of the last six. The owners point race, however, holds the
spotlight as Mike Jarret (and driver Nokie Fornoro) hopes to
chase down Cabral’s owner Tim Bertrand.
Although there have been exceptions, Thompson tends to favor the
veteran competitors. Cabral, the all-time Thompson NEMA winner
with seven, can also expect plenty of competition from Greg and
Russ Stoehr, Adam Cantor and Jeff Horn, all winners this year.
USAC veteran Cole Carter, second at the Boston Louie, returns to
the Bertrand stable. Carter will be in the car Ryan Newman drove
to a second earlier this year at Lee USA Speedway.
“Thompson is a stand on it place,” Tim Bertrand, “a test of both
driver and car.” Straightaway speeds are over 125 mph.
“You have to challenge the place but you have to show it the
utmost respect too,” says Fornoro, a four-time Thompson winner.
The Thompson NEMA win list, going back to a victory by Dutch
Schaefer in 1960, is one of the most impressive in NEMA. “The
good drivers have always looked forward to Thompson,” says NEMA
President Mike Scrivani Jr. “A Midget victory at Thompson looks
very good on the resume.”
Dave Humphrey, Hank Rogers Jr., Gene Bergin and Nokie Fornoro
won at Thompson in cars owned and prepped by Mike Jr. and his
legendary father.
Like the Scrivani family, the Stoehr brothers have a long
Thompson history. Greg Stoehr’s Thompson win, in the Zahar car
back in 1993, came after a late-race pass of brother Russ. The
brothers have not raced each other at Thompson since that day.
Gene Angelillo, Russ Stoehr’s current owner, grabbed his 100th
NEMA win at Thompson in 2000. Joey Payne Jr., in a backup car,
passed Russ Stoehr with two to go.

Cole Carter Back
For Thompson |
Cole Carter, a USAC Midget,
Sprint Car & Silver Crown driver and part of one of American's
greatest auto racing families, will return to the Northeastern
\Midget Association at Thompson Speedway's World Series (Oct.
24-25).
Carter, the son of Midget legend Pancho Carter, will again be
part of the Bertrand Motorsports stable. He had a second at
Seekonk Speedway's Boston Louie in August. This time he will
drive the No. 39 car that Ryan Newman drove to a second place at
Lee earlier this year.
"He was really impressed with the winged Midgets and told us he
would like to return," said owner Tim Bertrand. "We've been
working on it ever sense." Carter led the first half of the
Seekonk race.
The Carter and Bertrand families will "team up" for a trip to
Phoenix International Speedway's Copper Classic in November.
Carter, who finished third in Phoenix a year ago, will drive his
own Beast chassis powered by one of Bertrand's engines.
The team, currently ahead in both the driver (Randy Cabral) and
owner standings, has been busy throughout the season with
"guest" drivers, the list also including Pete Skias and Teddy
Christopher. |

Rifchin Trophy
Awaits
NEMA Thompson Winner |
Brockton, MA –
The winner of the 25-lap Northeastern Midget Association feature
at Thompson Speedway’s World Series (Oct. 17-18) will come away
with the inaugural Marvin Rifchin Memorial Trophy. The trophy
race, originally scheduled for July 2 (a rain out), honors
Rifchin, owner of M&H Tire and an integral part of NEMA from its
inception in 1953. Rifchin died on June 3 at age 93.
“Everybody would like to have this one,” says NEMA President
Mike Scrivani Jr. “The number of people he touched directly, the
influence he had on our club over the years is immense.”
Defending champion and current point leader Randy Cabral leads
NEMA into what is the club’s first 2009 visit. Other contenders
include Nokie Fornoro, Adam Cantor, Russ and Greg Stoehr and
Jeff Horn. Cabral was the winner of the “Marvin Rifchin
Appreciation event in 2006.
“We want to thank Thompson Speedway promoter Donald Hoenig for
his participation in honoring Marvin,” adds Scrivani.
Midgets and, soon after, stock cars, captured Rifchin’s
attention in the immediate post World War II era. Joining his
father Harry in the tire recapping business, M&H (the H stands
for Harry) became one of the first companies to make tires
specifically for racecars.
More than willing to take on the tire-making giants (notably
Goodyear and Firestone), Rifchin’s influence throughout
motorsports grew to epic proportions over some five decades. His
association with legend Don Garlits is part of drag racing
folklore. He played a major role in the Modified glory days of
the 1960s and 70s.
Rifchin’s contributions are evidenced by his membership in four
Halls of Fame including NEMA’s. He is in the National Hot Rod
Association, the New England Auto Racing and the Specialty
Equipment Manufactures Association (SEMA) halls as well.
“Still,” says long-time NEMA car owner and official Bruce Beane,
“Marvin stayed close to NEMA. He was part of the family. The M&H
logo was part of NEMA’s image for many years for many very good
reasons.”
Beane points out Rifchin was outgoing not only with his product
but also with his time and his intelligence.
“Over the years a lot of guys raced because of Marvin’s
generosity,” sums up 13-time owner champion Gene Angelillo. “He
really had a special place in his heart for the competitor. Near
the end of his life he was at a lot of our races and that was
really good for NEMA. The guy loved the Midgets.” |

Cantor Calls DAV
Win “Biggest Ever”
Nocella Scores 2nd Seekonk Lites Win |
Seekonk, MA – Calling it “the
biggest win of my career,” Adam Cantor won the 25-lap
Northeastern Midget Association 25 lap feature Sunday at Seekonk
Speedway’s DAV Memorial. It was the second win of the season for
Cantor who beat back a persistent William Wall over the final
nine laps.
The Wall family celebrated nonetheless, brothers Will (Wall #5)
and Aaron (Wall #55) capturing second and third respectively.
Nokie Fornoro (Jarret #4) and Erica Santos (Breault #44)
completed the top five.
Anthony Nocella won the 25-lap NEMA Lites feature on Saturday.
Cantor, who took the lead on lap six, faced a William Wall
restart challenge with 16 laps remaining. He got the jump but
couldn’t get away from the youngster. Loose off, Cantor said he
“tried babying in into three, but when I did it I could hear
Will out there. I had to stay on it.”
“The right rear gave up the last couple of laps,” said Wall. “I
couldn’t keep it on the outside. I needed a little more car.”
Cantor, who had troubles on Saturday, did get more car on Sunday
morning. “It seems we changed everything but the steering wheel
and the driver,” said Cantor’s dad Alan.
Although he fell in behind Santos on the initial green, Cantor
“knew I had a good car immediately. I went in pretty deep and it
stuck.”
The first yellow ended two battles – Santos and Cantor and
William Wall and Nokie Fornoro.
“Erica got me on the restart big time,” said Cantor. “I pride
myself on restart ability so I said some not-so-nice things
about myself. Still, I felt if I could get up to her left rear
off two I could go around her.” He took the lead out of four.
William Wall won the battle with Fornoro, moved past Santos for
second 10 laps in and was dogging Cantor when the second yellow
showed. Aaron Wall, who started ninth, was fourth by that time
and moved past Santos on the restart.
Point leader Randy Cabral (Bertrand 47) was sixth and Jeff Abold
(Seymour 29), who started 20th because of a driver change, was
seventh.
Nocella, winning for the second time at Seekonk this year, got
by Ed LeClerc Jr. after the only restart in the Lites event.
LeClerc had built a sizable edge before the yellow on lap 13.
Five lengths behind the leader, Joe Mikitarian, LeClerc and
Anthony Marvuglio finished second through fourth in a tight
bunch. Randy Cabral was fifth.
NEMA’s grand slam finish continues this weekend at
Thompson Speedway’s
World Series.

It
was Cantor’s fourth career win but his first at Seekonk.
Cantor
had the fastest lap in the feature (11.329) while Nocella’s
11.907 was best in the Lites run.
In
spite of two cautions, the feature was run in nine minutes, a
credit to starter Steve Grant. |

BIT OF SEEKONK HISTORY:
THE FIRST FEATURE RACE IN 1946 |
|
|

Ferrara (tallest) with car owner
John Givans and driver Johnny Kay circa 1967. |
|
Ferrara Named to
NEAR Hall of Fame |
Frank Ferrara, the
Northeastern Midget Association starter for seven years
(1965-71) and currently the co-owner of Whip City Speedway is
part of the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame’s Class of
2010.
Ferrara, already a member of the NEMA Hall of Fame, will be part
of the 13th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Jan 31, 2010 at
the LaRenaissance Banquet Hall in East Windsor, CT.
Starting as an owner/mechanic Springfield, MA native Ferrara has
served New England motorsports for well over 50 years. A
stockcar owner at Riverside Park in the early 1950s, he became
involved with Midgets following military service. He was also a
starter at Stafford Motor Speedway and a race sponsor through
the family business (Ferrara Spring) before becoming part of the
Whip City operation.
A number of NEMA and NEMA Lites drivers have come through Whip
City.
Other members of the Class of 2010 include drivers Geoff Bodine,
Mike Murphy, George Savory and Pete Fiandaca and car owners
Billy Simons, Bob Garbarino and Vic Miller
Ticket forms will be on the New England Antique Racers website (www.Near1.com)

Celebrating Machines That
Drink Methanol |
|
"STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn.— Despite a morning of hard rain, by 3
o’clock on a recent Tuesday afternoon the back 40 at Stafford
Motor Speedway had been transformed into a sunny village of
R.V.’s, campers and four-wheel-drive vehicles, complemented by
tents, wobbly lawn chairs and even-wobblier awnings. It was a
kind of Hooverville devoted to the pleasures of high velocity." |
| "This
is grass-roots racing at its essence. There are no ISMA dads, no
ISMA Nation, no television contracts, just fans addicted to
speed, unpredictable racing action and, just maybe, the smell of
methanol. Their hard-driving heroes, most of whom hold down day
jobs, are men like Chris Perley, the Rowley Rocket, from
Massachusetts.; Bentley Warren from Kennebunkport, Me., who
turns 69 this year; and Liquid Lou Cicconi from Aston, Pa." |

HELPING HANDS RETURNS AS
2009 CORPORATE SPONSOR |
BROCKTON, MA- Mike Jarret
will not commit himself nor driver Nokie Fornoro as 2009
Northeastern Midget Association championship contenders. The
17-race NEMA schedule opens Saturday night, May 23 at Monadnock
Speedway.
“Who knows what’s going to happen,” says Jarret. “Right now we
plan on making every race.” There is a back-up car in place. It
is, however, much too early to think about anything past that.
Jarret is NEMA’s “corporate sponsor.” Although the club uses the
logo of Jarret’s “Helping Hands of America” company, it is, he
says, “pretty much a personal thing using the allowance my wife
(Lu) gives me.” Lu Jarret is very involved with the club as
well.
While his duel role of sponsor/car owner leads to “worrying
about people getting the wrong idea” he has become content with
the latter position. “The team is four guys, my brothers Roger
and Guy and a friend Don Lanoue,” says Jarret. “We’re all senior
citizens, all over 65 and we love it. The wives come along.
We’re cooking up things in the pits and having fun.”
Fornoro, midway through his third decade in Midgets, is 51.
“Nokie had some physical problems last year and says he took
care of them over the winter,” Jarret says. “He remains a great
driver.”
MJ Motorsports comes off “an up and down year,” a strong second
at Thompson’s World Series the highlight. With four top threes,
Jarrett and Fornoro wound up eighth in their respective
standings.
Mike Scrivani Jr., NEMA’s president, is a “consultant,” but
Jarret and his fellow senior citizens “maintain the car and
transport the car.” The shop is at Jarret’s home.
Jarret went from a sponsor to an owner inside of a year. He
sponsored a car that Fornoro drove in 2004. When Fornoro lost
that ride the next season, Jarret began putting together a car
with the help of Peter Valeri, a summer neighbor on Cape Cod.
The car won the World Series and the next year wound up second
in points, 16 behind Valeri.
The relationship with NEMA and Fornoro goes back some 30 years.
Jarret was the business manager of the legendary Mike’s Truck
Stop in the late 1970s and early 80s. Mike Scrivani Sr.
campaigned some of the strongest cars in Midget history out of
that place, Mike Jr. doing much of the wrenching. “I used to run
the business so Mike Sr. and Mike Jr. could take care of the
Midgets,” Jarrett recalls.
The Scrivani/Fornoro team won 10 of 21 races in 1981, still one
of the most dominating seasons in NEMA history.
Jarret went off to do other things – primarily a junk yard and
then, after declaring himself “semi retired,” forming Helping
Hands with a partner in 2000. A few years later company
headquarters wound up next door to where Mike’s Truck Stop once
stood in Wrentham, MA.
It is not, he says, difficult to “rekindle memories” and while
he admits to enjoying doing that, he’s still very much into the
present. |
