Cabral Captures Ninth NEMA Championship in Dramatic
Season Finale at Waterford’s Angelillo-Fornoro Memorial
|
Waterford, CT
- On Sunday 10/5, the Mighty NEMA Midgets wrapped up their
thrilling 2025 season with a dramatic doubleheader weekend
at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl during the
Angelillo-Fornoro Memorial. At the end of a fiercely
competitive season, it was Randy Cabral who emerged
victorious, clinching his ninth NEMA Drivers Championship.
Piloting the Bertrand Motorsports #74, Cabral not only added
another title to his storied career but also helped secure
the team’s 14th Owners Championship,
further solidifying their legacy in NEMA history.
Heading into the final
feature, the championship stakes couldn’t have been higher.
Cabral and Paul Scally #30 were tied in points after
Scally’s dominant win the day before at Lee USA Speedway.
With the championship on the line, the formula was simple:
Scally just needed to finish ahead of Cabral, but it was
anything but easy.
Starting from 8th, “The
Dangerous One” Paul Scally threw everything he had at the
final race in pursuit of his first NEMA title. The
atmosphere was electric as both contenders pushed their cars
to the limit, but in the end, Cabral held strong and crossed
the line ahead, securing a milestone championship in
dramatic fashion.
In the final 25-lap
feature of the 2025 season, Mike Horn #93 and Randy Cabral
#74 led the field to the green flag. Horn took the initial
lead into turn one, but Cabral wasted no time, charging to
the outside down the backstretch. By the time they reached
the front straight, Cabral had surged ahead to lead lap one,
followed by Horn and Brayden Egan #3m.
As the field began to
spread out over the opening laps, Cabral set a blistering
pace, pulling away with nearly a half-straightaway lead.
Behind him, a heated three-car battle developed for fourth
between Joey Bailey #A1, Avery Stoehr in the Bertrand
Motorsports #39, and Paul Scally #30.
By lap 5, Scally dove
to the inside of Bailey in turn one to grab fourth. Stoehr
quickly followed suit, challenging Bailey on the inside. The
two battled side-by-side for several laps until lap 8, when
Stoehr made a strong move around the high side to claim
fifth. That same lap, Egan launched a move on Horn for
second, diving low into turn one, but Horn held strong.
As lapped traffic came
into play, the fight for second intensified. Horn, Egan, and
Scally raced nose-to-tail, each looking for the slightest
opening. On lap 13, Egan finally made it happen, powering
alongside Horn out of turn two and completing the pass in
turn four to take second.
With Cabral extending
his lead, Scally wasn’t done yet. By lap 15, he was
pressuring Horn hard. Hugging the low line, Scally pulled
even in turn one and powered past out of turn two to take
third. Now on the move, he set his sights on Egan.
By lap 18, Cabral’s
lead was a full straightaway. Meanwhile, Scally had reeled
in Egan for second, racing just a few car lengths behind.
The two ran nose-to-tail until lap 22, when Scally found the
opening he needed, diving to the inside down the
frontstretch and claiming second.
At the same time, a
spirited battle for fourth developed between Horn and
Stoehr. Stoehr used the high groove to build momentum and
eventually made the pass in turn three.
As the final laps
clicked off, Cabral remained untouchable at the front. On
lap 25, the checkered flag waved, signaling the end of the
NEMA season and the crowning of a champion.
In victory lane, Cabral
commented on his win, “I have not been looking at any
points, all I knew is that I just had one job to do tonight.
This win is important for me, as this memorial race was for
people that I grew up with and chasing, Gene Angelillo and
Drew Fornoro were the duo that everyone wanted to become.
This race is about them. I will never forget the induction
into the Hall of Fame. Drew and I began talking, and he told
Gene that I was going to be the next guy to beat. Him and
Chuck Welling were the only ones that thought that. Those
things mean the world to me. I don’t look at points; I am
just here to have fun and do this with my family. This
championship is for
Tim and Cara Bertrand, they really believed in me since day
one.”
To round out the top 10
were strong finishes by: Randy Cabral #74, Paul Scally #30,
Brayden Egan #3m, Avery Stoehr #39, Mike Horn #93, Joey
Bailey #A1, Matt O’Brien #16, Kyle Valeri #21, Mike
Pernesiglio #69, and E.J. Douville #55.
With the 2025 NEMA
season now in the books, the NEMA LITES will wrap up their
season on Saturday 10/11 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports
Park during the World Series Weekend.
Another championship
battle is set to unfold as Randy Cabral #47 leads the points
standings, with Kyle Valeri #17 trailing by just 14 points.
Can Cabral pull off the rare double championship sweep,
adding a NEMA LITES title to his already impressive season?
Or will we see a new face at the top as Valeri chases his
first title?
One thing is certain,
it’s going to be a day full of action you won’t want to
miss! Join us at Thompson Speedway, or if you can't make it
in person, be sure to tune in live on Racing America for
full coverage.

Gene and Marilyn Angelillo were, for decades, the
backbone of NEMA. Starting in 1983 Gene amassed 107 wins and
14 owner's championships. He also was president of the club
for several years with Marilyn serving as secretary. The
majority of his success came with Drew Fornoro, with Joey
Payne, Jr. and Russ Stoehr also winning championships for
him. Racing royalty drove Gene's cars, including the late
Ted Christopher, who won for him at Waterford, Jimmy
Broderick, a Waterford champion, and Joe Gosek, a Classic
winner at Oswego.
They were a perfect partnership in
NEMA and in life. If Gene was the stern dad of NEMA, Marilyn
was the den mother, looking out for everyone, and every now
and then keeping Gene in line (not an easy task)!
Gene's legacy transcends more than NEMA. Along with way he
picked up an ARDC championship, and his #45 Dumo's Desire
midget raced everywhere from Florida to Arizona. Gene had
the means to field almost any type of race car, even on a
national level, but his heart was forever with NEMA and the
midgets.
While their accomplishments in NEMA are well
noted, their devotion to family was paramount in their
lives. If anyone could mellow Gene, it was his grandkids.
Marilyn and Gene absolutely adored daughter Laura, and
grandkids Tiana, Cami, and Brooke. Marilyn left us in 2007,
Gene in 2010. Laura kept the team going for one more year,
winning a last championship for Gene and Marilyn with Russ
Stoehr.
Winner of over 100 races, Drew Fornoro was a
9-time champion in the Northeastern Midget Association
(NEMA) and raced 3/4 midgets, midgets and sprint cars
throughout the country. He was inducted into the National
Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 2017 and the New England
Auto Racers Hall of Fame in 2013.
Despite his
significant accomplishments in racing, Drew's personality
was even bigger! He loved interacting with his fans after
the races, always a huge smile and kind word. He also loved
to orchestrate cookouts in the pits for all of the race
teams to enjoy. He held epic events at home during the
summer for his extended family and close friends. Drew
passed on in May of 2023. |

Norwood Areana and Seekonk.
In the early 70’s, Chippy joined the Scrivani Racing
Team. His
knowledge and dedication were a tribute to the success of
the Scrivani Racing Team and to NEMA.
During the many decades he was associated with NEMA,
he was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone on race
day. A graduate
of WPI and a self-employed Civil Engineer, we are honored to

Young Gun Brayden Egan
Entering the NEMA
Midgets Field
|
When veteran driver and car owner, Jim Miller called
with the opportunity to race the iconic number 47
Bertrand/Linblad/Drinan Mid-Rail Chassis , it was a
life-changing moment for this rising star. Shocked but
grateful, Brayden Egan knew this was more than just a chance
to race; it was a chance to be part of something special. "I
understand what goes into a racing operation, especially at
this level, so to be asked to be behind the wheel was truly
an honor,".
Brayden was recently voted by his peers
the Mechanic of the Year Award. "It was an honor to receive
that award, knowing there are so many others who put so much
effort into their cars. To be recognized for my efforts
means a lot” Despite not yet having a long list of racing
achievements, he considers the award one of his proudest
accomplishments.
Looking ahead, he is aware of the
challenges that come with racing a more powerful car. "The
biggest challenge is getting used to the torque and
horsepower of the car. Learning to control that with my foot
will take some adjustment,". Additionally, adapting to the
differences between the Bertrand /Lindblad/Drinan chassis
and his previous Hawk NEMA LITES car, both from a mechanical
and driving perspective, is something he's focused on as he
prepares for the season. Fortunately, his familiarity with
the tracks and the drivers in the NEMA Lite series will give
him some much needed experience to make the adjustment.
Having joined a team with a history of success in NEMA,
he recognizes the value of that knowledge. "I can trust the
car and the owner, so I can focus more on my driving rather
than dealing with problems. I hope to one day add my name to
the list of wins they’ve achieved," he said.
When it
comes to his goals for the season, he remains grounded yet
ambitious. "My goals are to learn as much as I can, finish
races, gain respect, race clean, and progress both on and
off track throughout the year." Behind every successful
driver is a support system, and Brayden is no different.
"I’m lucky to have the support of my dad, my girlfriend,
Taylor, my friends, Anthony, Josh, Ben, TJ, Travis, and
Julian, as well as Pernesiglio Racing, Redline Motorsports,
Jim Miller, Circle Performance, my grandparents, and my
mom.” Brayden expressed the importance of the people who
help him both during and outside of race season.
As
he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his racing
career, there’s no doubt that with determination, support,
and passion for racing, this driver is one to watch in the
upcoming NEMA Midgets Series. Brayden
will make his NEMA Midget Debut at the Ray Kelley Memorial
Race at the New London Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday June
28th. Keep your eyes on this young gun and the new
youth movement in the NEMA Midgets, he will be fun to watch! |

NEMA
Midgets
Attract
Young Talent |
In 2025 NEMA fans will have their eyes on an
exciting rookie, RJ Deighton, a rising star on the
motorsports scene. RJ has an impressive track record in the
NASCAR Youth Series, where he dominated with four
championships in a single season. RJ is now stepping up to
compete in the ultra-competitive Northeastern Midget
Association series and is poised for success! Most recently,
RJ showed off his skills in a restricted wingless 600 Racing
at Airport Speedway in Newcastle Delaware.
As RJ gets
ready for his debut in a NEMA midgets, preparation will be
key. RJ said his approach is multifaceted. "To prepare
myself, I go out to the garage and learn more about the
cars. That way, when I'm on the track, I can better
communicate with my dad about how the car is handling. I
also train on the simulator to get a feel for different
track conditions, so I know what to expect in real-world
racing". Staying mentally and physically prepared is just as
important as having a fast car, and RJ has a solid pre-race
routine. "Before each race, I scope out the track and figure
out what lines I can take to be fast".
One of the
biggest transitions facing RJ will be adjusting to the
handling and setup of the NEMA cars. But RJ is no stranger
to these types of adjustments. "The car handling is
definitely different than a micro 600, but they feel pretty
similar to a quarter midget". But he's not resting on his
laurels. He is continuing to hone his skills in key areas
like downforce management, and learning when to lift or push
depending on the track conditions.
With his first NEMA
season around the corner, RJ has set some lofty, yet
realistic goals. "My goal for the 2025 season is to earn
consistent top 5 or top 10 finishes." he says. "If I feel
like I'm really exceeding, I'd love to get a victory or at
least finish in the top 3". It's a humble, yet ambitious goal
for someone with such a strong foundation in racing. Every
young racer needs guidance, and RJ is fortunate to have some
of the best in the business in his corner. "I've been
learning a lot from Tim Bertrand, Avery Stoehr, and the
whole Bertrand Motorsports crew." When it comes to who he
looks up to in the NEMA division, RJ states "I really look
up to two teams: Bertrand Motorsports and Matt Seymour
Racing (MSR). Both teams have great drivers with amazing
skills, and I hope to race like them someday." Behind every
great racer is a strong support system, and RJ is no
exception. "I have a lot of people supporting me--my family,
friends, and everyone who helps me get faster in the car. My
dad is my biggest supporter. He's always there to help me
get better and better, race after race." This unwavering
support will be essential as RJ navigates the highs and lows
of his first season in the NEMA series.
While racing
is clearly RJ's passion, he also enjoys activities off the
track that help him stay physically and mentally sharp.
"Outside of racing, I like to play lacrosse and go to
football games," With his strong foundation in racing,
dedicated work ethic, and a team of experienced mentors
behind him, RJ Deighton is ready to make his mark in the
Northeastern Midget Association. RJ's Beast Gearte midget
will be exciting to watch for the 2025 season and beyond.
Keep an eye out for this rising star as he makes his debut
in the NEMA series. |
